Q. What type of weather can
I expect? A. Central Idaho weather during the summer is
typically sunny, clear and warm with temperatures in the 80's during the day
and in the high 40's and 50's at night. However, this is mountain weather and
you must be prepared for radical weather changes. If it rains, it gets chilly.
Sunburn is usually the biggest concern, so bring plenty of sunscreen. The Main
Salmon water temperatures range from the low 50's in early June to the high
70's in late August. We suggest the use of wetsuits in June and early July.
Q. When is the best time to go on the
river? A. Water conditions on the Main Salmon are
determined by the amount of snowfall that the region receives. Water levels and
subsequent rapid intensity will always be higher in June and less in July and
August. Though rapids are bigger in June, there are more rapids and warmer
water for swimming in the second half of July and August.
Q.
What are the meals like? A. Idaho
outfitters are known for their great cooking. Your guides will create many
delicious dutch-oven entrees and mouthwatering desserts using a wide variety of
fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, and breads. If you have any special
dietary needs, please let us know in advance. We will do everything we can to
accommodate you.
Q. What beverages are
provided? A. We provide water and cold lemonade during
the day on the gear rafts. In camp we also offer coffee, hot chocolate and tea.
You are welcome to bring additional beverages, just please put them in
nonbreakable containers.
Q. What if I need
first aid? A. The guides carry both basic and some advanced first aid supplies
that are used for wilderness camping. A satellite phone and Automatic External Defibrillator accompany every trip. Every guide is certified in basic first aid and
CPR. Some of our guides have advanced first aid and EMT certification. Please
alert your trip leader to any medical problems you may have such as allergic
reactions or diabetes. Evacuations or medical assistance beyond first aid are
the financial responsibility of the client.
Q. What are the age limits for clients? A. We
suggest that children 7 and older go on the river in July and August. By that
time the water is warming up and is much more fun for them to play in. The big
sandy beaches are perfect to provide hours of entertainment for children. Be
sure to ask about other trips with children on them.
Q.
What are the toilet facilities? A. We
carry out everything we pack in. We locate the bathroom in different, very
scenic locations every day. Our toilets are very sanitary and available in camp
at all times.
Q. What should I
wear? A. Casual, layered clothing. Long underwear is good
for chilly nights and cool early season wear. Rain gear and a pair of water
sandals are also recommended. For the most part, a few shorts, swimsuits,
t-shirts, a sweater/sweatshirt, and a pair of long pants will do - especially
if made of quick-drying, non-cotton fabrics. (Rapids splash, and you'll want
something that dries quickly so as to avoid being chilled.)
Q.
Where will we camp? A. We camp on a
different scenic beach every night. One of the unspoken rules of the river is
that if a beach is occupied by another boating party, you pass on to the next
uninhabited one. Luckily, the Main Salmon is famous for its wide sandy beaches,
and there's a lot to choose from - each one, almost more beautiful than the
last.
Q. Does Adventures Wild set up kayak
support or kayak instructional trips? A. Adventures Wild
enjoys working with kayakers. We can set up kayak support trip and recommend
June for those kayakers with a solid roll and a desire for challenge, and we
recommend July and August for lower level groups that want to try a multi day
river clinic. For groups of 4 or more kayakers Adventures Wild will arrange for
an instructor to be in the water with you during the trip.
Q.
What about tipping? A. Your guide
will work very hard to ensure you the time of your life, remembering all of the
little details. If you feel your guide has done a good job then feel free to
give them a gratuity. If you choose to honor your guide with a gratuity, you
might consider a guideline what you would tip if you ate all of your meals at a
fine restaurant, ie 15-20 % of trip cost, the amount that you'd expect to pay
in a fine restaurant. (Only here, You'll find your guides do so much
more.)
